On Thursday, March 6, I coordinated a new meeting of the Torino Social Impact Community of Practice on Gender Equality, focusing on the challenges posed by digital and artificial intelligence in this field. The event took place at the Tullio De Mauro Fund, within the spaces of the Italian Network of Popular Culture.
During my introduction, I posed a crucial question: does artificial intelligence represent an opportunity or an obstacle for gender equality? We discussed how AI can both replicate and amplify pre-existing patterns in society, risking perpetuating gender stereotypes and consolidating existing inequalities. The challenge, instead, is to build an alliance between artificial intelligence and gender equality to reduce these historical imbalances.
I thank Gianni Garbarini of Sloweb for his presentation on ethics in digital and Alessandra Buffa and Federica Lombardi of the Piemonte Innova Foundation for presenting the DEA – Digital, Equity, Actions project, aimed at reducing the gender gap in the technology sector.
This meeting further strengthened my belief: a collective commitment is needed to ensure that technological innovation serves equity and inclusion.
Also in light of my recent experience at CSW69 in New York with UN Women Italy, I strongly believe in the path of the community of practice, which is gradually addressing priority issues related to gender equality, with the aim of identifying innovative practices, with a committed and participatory approach from the organizations in the Torino Social Impact ecosystem.
