Last Monday, I had the pleasure of giving a lecture on “PA and Artificial Intelligence: Risks and Opportunities in Everyday Life” aimed at seniors at the University of Turin in Nichelino. The high turnout and interest confirmed the importance of discussing technology with all age groups and promoting awareness.
During the meeting, we explored both the opportunities and challenges related to AI:
Positive aspects → From the use of AI in medicine to optimizing the interface of public services, we saw how it can improve everyone’s lives.
Challenges and problems → I highlighted the environmental impact of AI and the often invisible working conditions of those responsible for data cleansing and management, as well as the lack of transparency of algorithms which, when used in highly sensitive services such as social services, can increase inequalities rather than bridge them.
Technologies are not neutral: we must work to raise awareness, at all ages, to encourage equitable and inclusive development in their use.
The participants’ interest and questions have given me even more confidence in this journey.
